SOUTH Africa's currency is one of the few that looks good against sterling, as former Londoner Liz Wilson knows. She sold her flat in Collingham Gardens, Earl's Court, and bought an airy home in Constantia, one of Cape Town's most affluent suburbs.

Throwing open her doors, she reveals beautiful French-grey interiors, parquet floors and French ornate fireplaces bought in Parisian flea markets, and antiques from London, where Wilson, 53, lived for 30 years. "This is what you get over here for your money," she says. More and more British buyers are following her path from London to Cape Town. Last year, 460,000 of us visited South Africa, the vast majority heading to Cape Town. Some are "swallows" heading south for three months in search of relief from the UK winter while others are moving permanently to this city in the shadows of Table Mountain.
