SAINSBURY'S profits crashed from Pounds 366 million to Pounds 131 million over the first half, in line with the grim forecast by chief executive Justin King last month.

At the pre-tax level, the group tumbled into the red by Pounds 39 million - its firstever loss - after hefty exceptional items.
