Royal Request, but No Kissing

Summary

THE Queen was guided by constitutional convention when Gordon Brown was called to Buckingham Palace today.

She asked him to form a government but, unlike the scene in the film The Queen, would not have had her hand kissed. The Palace said that although the Court Circular records that the Prime Minister Kissed Hands on Appointment, this does not actually occur. Mr Brown would have been met in the Palace quadrangle by the Queens private secretary, Sir Robin Janvrin, to escort him to the Private Audience Room. Mr Browns wife Sarah would have waited in the Equerrys sitting room before being taken upstairs afterwards.
