Summary
ROYAL Mail faced criticism today after trying to raise the price of stamps by 60 per cent to 48p. The increase has been blocked by industry regulator Postcomm, which proposes a rise in the cost of a first-class stamp from 30p to 34p and second class from 21p to 23p.
But Royal Mail vows to fight the price caps. Chairman Allan Leighton said: "These proposals will starve Royal Mail of vital investment. We cannot accept them." The price caps would be phased in between next year and 2010, with a performance target of delivering 99 per cent of mail every working day. Peter Carr, chairman of consumer group Postwatch, said: "The proposals represent a better deal for customers and we urge Postcomm to resist pressure to weaken them."See the full content of this document
