MY DISTANT cousin, Miss Eagar, was a governess to Tsar Nicholas II's daughters. Her memoirs ended with the tantalising line: "... in 1904, shortly after the Tsarevitch was born, I left the Imperial family for private reasons and returned to Ireland". I wanted to know what those reasons were and where she ended up.

On Google, up popped a town called Eagar, in Arizona. I dimly remembered my mother teasing my father about this as it was allegedly founded by some relations of his who were Mormons and wanted more wives than was acceptable in Anglo-Irish society.
