ACCORDING to research carried out by the Financial Services AuthoritySarah Pennells, 75 per cent of couples find money the hardest subject to talk about, while 25 per cent argue when they do try and discuss it.

It is not so important if you and your partner have different attitudes to money while you are dating but it can be a very different matter once you take on joint financial commitments, such as a mortgage. With property prices falling, some couples feel under pressure to jump onto the housing ladder. However, it is not a good idea to buy together just because you think it might improve your relationship. In fact, if you have to struggle to pay the mortgage or if your job is not very secure it could be a route to further rows.
