BLINDS are the contemporary home's alternative to curtains. The can be made bespoke in a vast number of materials, or bought cheaply from a DIY store, cut to size and fitted in an afternoon. Rollers are the most popular, either ones that unwind from the top when you pull a cord (and which spring back up again when you want them open), or ones with a continuous side chain that avoids those nasty whiplash effects when the pull-cord versions are too highly strung.

Fabrics used in roller blinds range from translucent voiles and smooth silks to textured linens, rough denim, faux suede and kitsch animal prints. Bottom edges can be plain, shaped or trimmed (perhaps with bobbles).
