4.1% Rise in Wages Stirs Fresh Worry Over Rates

AVERAGE wages rose by 4.1% toward the end of last year, but the spectre of larger, cost-of-living related pay claims in coming weeks today stoked worries about further interest-rate rises.

Though official earnings figures for November came in below economists' worst fears, the City today warned that the Bank of England's rate-setting monetary policy committee is likely to focus on the current pay round.
