WITH regard to Warner Music, the label behind artists such as Madonna, ending provision of free videos for YouTube: the creators of music have welcomed technological developments that have granted greater access to audiences and have seen fan bases entertained in new ways.
The sale of YouTube to Google is one example of the rich rewards that have partly been built on the back of music's creators. Artists must be consulted by all parties on deals based on the exploitation of their art as the deals are made, be they between Warner and YouTube, or record labels and the likes of Nokia. Issues of transparency and accounting are a part of that. It will be interesting to see how the recently formed Featured Artists Coalition responds.See the full content of this document
