MIDDLESBROUGH manager Gareth Southgate praised the "courage and character" of his side after overcoming West Brom to set up a quarterfinal with Manchester United at the Riverside Stadium.

Boro were second best in the opening 45 minutes at the Hawthorns and were fortunate only to be trailing to a goal from Darren Carter. But Mark Viduka forced the game into extra-time with a 63rd minute equaliser.West Brom then had Nathan Ellington sent off and missed him when Boro edged home 5-4 on penalties to reach the last eight for the second successive season. Southgate (right) said: "I think we've now had something like five or six replays in the last two seasons in the FA Cup so we are never short of entertainment value in this competition. We were really poor in the first half, not positive or aggressive enough. We were on the back foot and West Brom were by far the better side.
