MIDDLESBROUGH manager Gareth Southgate praised the "courage and character" of his side after overcoming West Brom to set up a quarterfinal with Manchester United at the Riverside Stadium.
Boro were second best in the opening 45 minutes at the Hawthorns and were fortunate only to be trailing to a goal from Darren Carter. But Mark Viduka forced the game into extra-time with a 63rd minute equaliser.West Brom then had Nathan Ellington sent off and missed him when Boro edged home 5-4 on penalties to reach the last eight for the second successive season. Southgate (right) said: "I think we've now had something like five or six replays in the last two seasons in the FA Cup so we are never short of entertainment value in this competition.
