HOME SECRETARY John Reid came under bitter attack from predecessor Charles Clarke today over a U-turn on police mergers.

Mr Clarke's plans to create new regional police forces by merging smaller county forces are set to be dropped by Mr Reid following a backlash among officers about needless bureaucracy and concern over the Pounds 1billion cost.
