SIR Tom McKillop, chairman, and Sir Fred Goodwin, chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland, looked to have escaped with their corporate skins intact today as the bank reported the first loss in its 40 years on the stock market.

RBS lost [pounds]691 million in the first six months of the year after taking credit crunch writedowns of [pounds]5.9 billion. The loss was nowhere near as bad as the City had feared.
