IT SEEMS charity begins with the car, and people looking for entertaining ways to raise cash for good causes are turning to madcap vehicle rallies to create awareness and generate money.

There are plenty to choose from, many with London connections. Take the Gumball 3000 event. Created to raise money for testicular cancer charities, it's likely to start in Waterloo Place next year, heading for Venice, Istanbul, and then, thanks to the hire of giant Russian transport planes, North Korea, Japan and Las Vegas. However, its three-week duration and Pounds 20,000 entry fee make this a charity car fest for the very wellheeled.
