GORDON BROWN'S first visit to Balmoral at the weekend as Prime Minister must have been a nail-biting affair, given that he's not strong on small talk. Following immediately after Princess Diana's memorial service, when Gordon and Sarah Brown were sitting directly behind the Royal Family in the Guards Chapel, it was of course the tenth anniversary of the Queen's most disastrous week at her Scottish castle.

To cap it all, Stephen Frear's Oscar-winning film The Queen, starring Dame Helen Mirren as Her Majesty, and depicting Tony Blair as a gleaming beacon of fairness and wisdom, was showing yesterday evening on ITV1. Small wonder that the Browns decided to skip the Highland Games at Braemar, which the Blairs always found so tedious, and were back in Downing Street last night.
