Summary

POSH DATE I MET my date in Soho for a buzzy night out sharing dumplings in Ping Pong - but annoyingly, when we pitched up, we saw a queue that practically reached Regent Street. I was desperate for dim sum and the nearest option was Yauatcha (15-17 Broadwick St, W1, 020 7494 8888), the Hakkasan-owned dim sum joint.

We were placed on a little table for two (good, as others had to share - how unromantic!). The decor is slick and atmospheric with fairy-lit ceilings - perfect for holding hands under the table. The menu needs some serious debunking. The sticky pork ribs were about the only thing we could understand - so we had a portion of those, then had fun ordering a dozen random dishes with no idea what we'd be served. So we were pleasantly surprised by some amazing, fragrant spinach cubes with prawn and water chestnut, and by a delicious sticky vegetable bun - and put off by a fried spring roll filled with slippery veg. We saved room for the pudding - a summer fruit tiramisu that came with two spoons and was so huge it could have fed all the remaining diners. The bill, with jasmine tea and a glass of wine each (well, it was a school night!), came to Pounds 85 - not bad for a date that felt like a real occasion.
