As sunset tinged the white crags of Switzerland's Dents du Midi mountains pink, my husband and I tramped up a snowfield, our way lit by gas lamps placed at intervals along the track.

Ahead was an incongruous sight: what looked like a fleet of Martian pods had settled on the landscape; white domes, some smaller with circular viewing holes, two larger, each with a huge window, which on closer inspection offered a view of a rather homely interior wood-burning stove, sofa with fluffy throws, antique French dining table and two pairs of slippers warming by the fire.

This is Whitepod, possibly the world's greenest ski resort. Guests stay in 'pods', erected at the beginning of the season.
