CEPHALONIA has a strange effect on people. Whenever I mention that we are going to the Greek island for a one-week family holiday, someone who has been there before always turns mistyeyed recalling perfect days on idyllic beaches. Or at least they'd have a friend who had been on holiday there, which was their cue to recount vicarious tales of vacation bliss.

All of which made me suspect that the island, the largest of the Ionian Isles, would be teeming with Brits, searching in packs for that elusive deserted bay or isolated taverna.
