IN THE new film The Edge of Love, the young Dylan Thomas's poetry seduces Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley. But it didn't seduce everyone. Barrie Clement, an old friend and Fleet Street colleague, grew up in a working-class family in South Wales.

"When it came to his round, he said: 'I've no money but I'll write you a poem on the back of a beer mat,' the cheeky sod." Barrie grew up to become the first Clement in 1,000 generations to go to university.
