Going Up Market ; This Little Piggy Went to Market. Hettie Harvey Eats Her Way Round the World's Best Food Stalls

Summary

SHARK'S TALE The award-winning St George's Market is one of Belfast's oldest attractions, built between 1890 and 1896. It had a Pounds 4.5 million restoration in 1997 to its original Victorian splendour. With three streets running through it, the single storey building houses hundreds of stalls. The main market days are the Friday Variety Market (6am-2pm) and the City Food Garden Market on Saturdays (9am-3pm), which also includes a number of flower stalls and live music often jazz or flamenco.

WHAT TO BUY On Fridays, you'll find all sorts of Atlantic delicacies at the 23 fish stalls including shark. The Saturday market sells everything local and fresh such as beef from Armagh, pork from Cookstown, Irish cheeses, venison, pheasant in season and organic fruit and vegetables. But it's not just Irish food on the menu: the market has become very cosmopolitan, and you're now just as likely to pick up something Caribbean, Mexican or Eastern European as you are a pat of Irish butter.
