Hybrid furniture is the hottest trend right now and the capital's hip hotels are getting in on the act. In Rough Luxe, the achingly cool King's Cross hotel owned by London-based interior designer and gallery owner Rabih Hage, you'll find designer Karen Ryan's curious two-for-the-price- of-one conjoined antique chairs.

The trend is getting a major airing at this week's London Design Festival (LDF) -- an event that Mayor Boris Johnson is wholeheartedly endorsing. He will be giving a speech about the importance of the city's creative industries tonight at a soiree held for the event's partners and collaborators. Sure to be there is Alasdhair Willis, husband of Stella McCartney, whose company Established & Sons will be exhibiting designer Sebastian Wrong's Heidi stool made of a fire engine-red tractor seat, resting incongruously on three milking stool-like oak legs. Established has a celebrity following with Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna and Thandie Newton all cooing over its designs.
