THE LONG grass is yellow and the mown areas are brown. As our photographs today demonstrate, the usually verdant turf of London's parks has undergone a transformation into a Mediterranean landscape. The Royal Parks authorities could use sprinklers, thanks to the bore holes on their land, but they are rightly seeking to conserve their resources, and assure us that their trees are not in danger. However, the condition of the parks is a reminder to gardeners of what they have endured on their own plots this summer, thanks to the failings of Thames Water.

The hosepipe ban has been a source of extreme frustration to all those who love their gardens.
