PERHAPS this is the very last year of lugging a lot of books on holiday. In November 2007, Amazon launched its electronic reader, called Kindle, in the US and its fast becoming a cult.

On Amazon.com, there are more than 3,000 appreciative consumer reviews, even though the thing is far from cheap at $359. A Kindle is the size and weight of just one thin paperback, seven-anda-half inches by five, and weighs just over 10 ounces. Yet it can store up to 200 books, suitcases and suitcases worth, say, or even more than that with the addition of a memory card. Moreover (in the States only, at the moment), there are more than 130,000 books listed by Amazon available for purchase and delivery in just a minute or two, so you can decide you want a copy of a book and have it almost at once, wherever you are, even between the departure gate and the plane.
