SOME diarists decline in interest as they age. Not Lees-Milne. This 12th volume of his wonderful, addictive journals covers the last years of his life, up to his death at the age of 89 (final words: "My handwriting is very shakey [sic]. Damn it.") As before, there are numerous funerals, frequent stays at Chatsworth, endless people casually referred to by their titles, not names. The honesty, though, is startling. On his own appearance on video: "a wornout, drooling old man, hardly able to express himself, like a very ancient bloodhound, bags under lustreless eyes". On Diana, the day after her death: "She was shallow and devious, as cunning as a vixen, determined to do him down, motivated by malice and spite."See the full content of this document
