Michael Palin Won a Round of Applause ; the Londoner's Diary [Edition 2]

Summary

MICHAEL Palin won a round of applause at the Portal Gallery in New Cavendish Street last night when he noted the absence of humour in the art establishment, which he said was exemplified by the Portal's artist Beryl Cook never being made a Royal Academician.

The Python star and world traveller was celebrating the gallery's halfcentury -- "50 Years of 'magicking things into existence'" with the launch of a book on its star-studded history by Laura Gascoigne and Jess Wilder. Recalling a 28-year acquaintance with the gallery, Palin defined its Pythonesque themes as "sex, surrealism and humour", a "nirvana of silliness", an "antidote to blandness" and an "oasis of insanity".
