THEY should have called it The Gran. Never in the history of rail journeys had so many elderly people been in one dining car. "Australians like to see their country," explains Barry, in his seventies, as we trundled through the Outback.
As with many passengers on this new, 47-hour journey linking Darwin and Adelaide, Barry and his wife were silver nomads doing the 1,850-mile trip both ways.
