Summary
ANDREW GILLIGAN claims that bus ridership "turned the corner in 1993" (12 June). In fact, significant industrial unrest affected the network in 1993/94 and there were fewer passenger journeys made then than in any other year in the Nineties. Taking 1993 as the base point for comparison significantly inflates the pre-Transport for London growth seen on the network.
Over the whole decade to 1990/91- 1999/2000 numbers grew by six per cent an average of only slightly over half a per cent a year. In the seven years since the Mayor took office, bus passenger numbers have increased by 45 per cent an average of six per cent a year. Growth is continuing, with passenger numbers increasing by 3.5 per cent between 2005/06 and 2006/07.See the full content of this document
