Hercules/Les Arts Florissants Barbican Theatre

AT the opening of Handel's musical drama Hercules, the eponymous hero has already completed his Twelve Labours. Following those acts of strength and courage he has razed a city to the ground and carried off the princess Iole as his trophy. Luc Bondy's tremendous staging strongly suggests that his wife Dejanira had good grounds for her jealousy (Handel's librettist, Thomas Broughton, was more subtly ambiguous on the point than Sophocles).
