Summary


The first convicts sent by the British Government to colonise Australia landed in Botany Bay.

The southern hemisphere country had remained unexplored and unsettled by the British for 18 years since Captain Cook's 1770 voyage of discovery. But finally a fleet of ships set sail from Portsmouth and landed in Australia in 1788, with 750 convicts on board, sent by King George III.
