London's Olympic Excitement Mounts ; Established 1827 [Edition 2]

Summary

IN EXACTLY three years' time this city's Olympic Games will be under way. There are promising signs that Londoners are looking forward to the time when they can celebrate this spectacular festival of sport. This newspaper's poll today shows that a majority believe the Games will have a lasting impact on the capital. The absolute deadline created by 2012 has the ability to catalyse investment not only in east London but in other parts of the city.

On this page the Mayor speaks of how he intends to use the coming of the Olympics to prompt changes in London's environment, such as more trees and better provision for cyclists, as well as transforming the areas around the Olympic Park. The emphasis on the legacy, as well as the summer of 2012, is absolutely right. The proposal from shadow sports spokesman Hugh Robertson to include cricket among the sports able to use the main stadium after the Games deserves consideration, given the sell-out crowds at Test matches and demand from east London's many cricket fans of south Asian heritage. We also welcome the Government's proposal for a new figure who can galvanise public participation in sport as well as drawing in more private-sector contributions. Since 1997, there have been many promises to engage more children and adults in sport, with little effect to date.
