FOOTBALL is now so omnipresent in our lives that it is easy to forget those not so far off days when it was not so. Consider the 1980s, for example. The national game was then so unpopular that many people preferred to watch snooker even if that involved Steve Davis taking a week to clear the table.

How TV Changed Football Forever (Sky One) was a welcome reminder of the bad old days. Then, it was de rigueur for players to sport dodgy barnets and matching moustaches. Deep stupidity was also commonplace, at a time when moons and parrots dominated the vocabulary.
