ACCORDING to one of Michelle Obama's favourite designers, "she knows what she looks good in, but at the same time, is open to suggestion". Which pretty much makes her every designer's dream client. Nobody wants to dress a neurotic, "does my bum look big in this?" type woman. It takes confidence to make clothes really sing, and Mrs O has confidence in spades.

She also loves a shift dress. Hers always look modern, thanks to the inclusion of stylistic tics such as an origami detail at the neck (very Roland Mouret). Witness how much more current hers looked compared with the tobacco brown dowdiness of Laura Bush's, which was frumpishly high-necked. Like many confident dressers, Obama also loves red, the most dominant colour of the spectrum.
