Summary


FIVE years ago "one of the best-loved men in Britain" published an autobiography, Trowel and Error. But what went down well with the fanbase was not Alan's years at horticultural college, nor the titbits of backstage gossip, but the kiddie stuff for here's a further instalment entirely devoted to his Yorkshire childhood. It's a delight.

The Titchmarshes make great company: loving mum Bessie, little sister Kath, gentle dad Alan (Alan Jr was known as Sparrow), gutsy Grandma Titch, bingo queen Auntie Alice and most of all Cindy, the disabled corgi entranced by Sparrow's skills on the mouth organ: "Short howls, then long ones, closing her eyes and losing herself in some kind of canine ecstasy." Titchmarsh's writing isn't exactly orgasmic, but it'll certainly raise a smile.
