A DECISION by McDonald's Australia to use more New Zealand potatoes for its fries could have a small spin-off for Manawatu- Rangitikei potato growers. But any impact in New Zealand is expected to be more important for South Island growers.

Tasmanian potato growers have been protesting over the deal, which has seen the Australian processing company Simplot lose half its McDonald's french fries contract -- a loss of about $A50 million to Tasmania's economy.
