AS HIS Nato successors meet today to decide whether to heed America and send more troops to Afghanistan, Michael Portillo seems to vaunt his new life in the media above his old one in politics.

"I used to be in the House of Commons so I'm not used to addressing a live audience," was his opening salvo last night at the broadcast of the 500th edition of Radio 4's The Moral Maze in front of a large and often voluble gathering at the Royal Society of Medicine in Wimpole Street.
