Mr Bush Is Right: This War Cannot Be Won

Summary


WATCHING George W Bush speak to the Republican convention in New York last night reminded me of the old joke about how many US presidents it takes to change a lightbulb. (The answer is two - one to change the bulb, the other to declare it a shining beacon of hope and freedom.) It was all beautifully crafted, lushly rhetorical, full of stuff no one could disagree with, hysterically applauded by the assembled true believers - in short, a thrillingly average presidential speech.

It will hand Mr Bush a few points in the polls, but probably not victory - yet - in this knife-edge election. We still don't know whether it will be Four More Years, as chanted in New York - or Two More Months, as fervently hoped across super-sized portions of the planet.

Perhaps a better long-term clue to what will happen in November came earlier in the week. On Monday, Mr Bush said he did not think the war on terror could be won. This was such a damaging outbreak of common sense and honesty that it had to be withdrawn.
