PARENTS were today told they should make their children eat everything on their plate to deal with the food crisis.
During a debate on food security, food minister Jonathan Shaw told MPs youngsters needed to be taught not to waste food as its cost was likely to remain above recent levels for years. He said: "It is vital that the generation of our children now in school grow up valuing food. We waste about [pounds]10 billion worth of food every year." He also said prices are unlikely to have an impact on the share of household expenditure going on food in Britain, comments likely to anger families who have seen essential goods spiral by up to 19 per cent a year. Mr Shaw said that in 2007 the proportion of household expenditure on food was 9.2 per cent, 1.5 per cent lower than a decade ago.
