TODAY'S Home Office figures on immigration are no cause for alarm - but they should be a cause of embarrassment for ministers. More than two years ago the Home Office predicted that just 13,000 immigrants would come to Britain when Poland and nine other countries joined the EU. When this newspaper predicted much higher figures, we were roundly condemned. Yet it now transpires that more than 427,000 have come to the UK, part of a total of more than a million immigrants over the past two years.

This wave has been enormously beneficial to the capital. The new immigrants have rapidly become part of London life, filling skill shortages in dozens of industries. It has quickly become hard to imagine London without its Polish builders, Slovak nannies and others in jobs from doctors to shop assistants.
