ON 24 January 2004, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Bill Gates predicted that email spamming would soon be over: "Two years from now, spam will be solved."

Well, Bill, judging by the amount of "pump and dump" offers that come my way two years on, you were talking out of your USB portal. They're all the same: an unknown sender; an enticing subject (one to me last week was marked "hi tragically" - I clicked on it to see who had died); a graphic to avoid detection by anti-spam filters; and a chunk of text that at first glance looks intelligible (one was a news report on the disappearanceof a girl - nice - while others recently have been sections from Victorian novels).
