MAURITIUS: the name conjures up images of honeymooning couples and lazy evenings spent drinking cocktails while watching the sun dip lazily beneath the Indian Ocean horizon. Which is why I am surprised to find myself perched 45m up above a roaring, precipitous waterfall.

This isnt the Mauritius Id been led to expect. But with a credit crunch looming and everybody in the tourism industry attempting to jump aboard the green bandwagon, even a stalwart couples destination like this is trying to diversify and attract a new breed of holidaymaker. So this tiny island off the coast of Africa is being marketed as an adventure paradise, with adrenaline-filled attractions such as mountain biking, kite-surfing, sub-scootering and zip-wiring to the fore.
