GORDON Brown will soon host the unveiling of the new Baroness Thatcher portrait at No 10, postponed this morning after the death of Ivan Cameron. It will be one of those moments when we pinch ourselves and imagine what Old Mr Brown would have said about her, as opposed to new Mr Brown, who can grin and bear anything that cements his shaky presence at her old address.
A reflowering of the Thatcher mystique is upon us. Another BBC drama tomorrow night, entitled Margaret, is the democratic equivalent of Downfall, charting her last embattled days as her court turned on her, and the usual combination of resentments and ambition do the rest.
