Summary
THE implication of NGOs like Save the Children that by adopting from another country you compromise your support for other efforts to help that country is specious and confuses issues. There is individual need -- every child has the right to a family, ideally one from within their own community, but in a country stricken by Aids there are simply not enough to take on the responsibility. Then there are the needs of the country, only some of which can be fulfilled by NGOs, and Madonna with her millions has made a huge contribution in this regard.
The UK currently has the lowest rate of international adoption in the EU, with major obstacles for any family who wants to adopt this way -- yet it remains the only option for many white couples who will not be taken on as potential adopters for British children because of long-standing resistance to transracial adoption.
