SERIAL entrepreneur Luke Johnson snapped up Borders' struggling UK and Ireland bookstores today in a deal that had some scratching their heads.

Johnson defied conventional wisdom that High Street booksellers cannot compete with Amazon to complete the purchase although, at 20 million, the price is far short of the 50 million City analysts initially expected.
