ENGLISH landscape artist JMW Turner believed the Kent coastal resort of Margate had the "loveliest skies in all Europe". On a clear day, you can see all the way to Essex, and though that alone would not give many a reason to go there, Turner was right: Margate's skies, whether clear blue, brooding, or blazing with a sunset, are often glorious.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for the faded town below. Today, it is a very different place from the genteel resort that Turner knew in the 1830s when he painted more than 100 scenes from an unknown address in the old town.
