I WAS exhausted and slightly high from the birth, but I distinctly remember looking at Charlotte and thinking: "Oh, she looks as though she has Down's syndrome."

What I noticed was the fold at the back of her neck. It hadn't been picked up by any scans, but the minute I saw her, it seemed obvious. I didn't worry about it then - I was too busy cuddling my daughter, just breathing her in - but a while later, I casually said to the midwife: "She looks as if she has Down's, doesn't she?" And to my amazement, she simply said: "Yes."
