LONG gone are the days when our MPs represented the cream of the intelligentsia. Lembit Opik, the Liberal Democrat MP, took part in a celebrity edition of Mastermind recorded this week with TV presenter Paul Ross, Coronation Street actress Wendi Peters and TV gardener Diarmuid Gavin.

Opik, whose specialist subject was Japanese motorcycles, revealed he scored 21 but declines to tell me where he finished. "On my way out I bumped into Mylene Klass [pictured, formerly in pop group Hearsay]," he tells me.
