In the past the British authorities have been far too sanguine about radical preachers in their midst, thinking they were no danger to this country

THE DAY after the London bombings, one Londoner was interviewed on al-Jazeera TV. Dr Hani al- Sibai, director of the Al-Maqreze Centre for Historical Studies in Hammersmith, described the attacks as a "great victory" for al Qaeda which "rubbed the noses of the world's eight most powerful countries in the mud".
