WHAT'S going on at Marks & Spencer? A survey of the latest collections tells me M& S woman will be wearing lots of cheap chiffon, shapeless tops and frump this season. No wonder sales are flagging. The clothes in the younger Per Una section are particularly drab. Yet the store insists on using exotic supermodel Lily Cole to lure in female youth.

I detect a disconnect. Lily is a striking beauty with a clever head on her shoulders. But M& S is trying to sell clothes to the girl next door.
