AN ELEGANT city, Paris is easily walked in a day (it's 15 per cent smaller than London), is full of temptation and culture in equal measure. It has a menu for everyone: historic monuments and museums, art galleries, elegant fashion, delicate gardens. It is bourgeois to the west, gritty to the east and there are 20 arrondissements (districts) to choose from, starting by the Louvre and spiralling out clockwise.

The Urban Land Institute and accountants PwC named it as the "top overall investment market for risk- adjusted returns" in 2006 and 2007 and The International Law Partnership has placed it first or second in its "Top Ten Investment" locations for five years.
