RAY LEWINGTON took the call on his mobile phone from Graham Simpson at 7.30am. Just before the Watford manager was about to jump into his car and begin his daily battle with the M25 traffic from his home in Kingston to the club's London Colney training ground, he was summoned to a meeting at the chairman's Hertfordshire home.

Two hours later Simpson had brought Lewington's three-year reign as manager to an end.
