SATURDAY is St Leger Day at Doncaster. The oldest of British horseracing's five Classics also marks the day when stock market punters increase their trading activity.

"Sell in May and go away, return again on Leger Day" is the adage, and in the past it has proved sage advice. Not so this year. Investors who sold in May would have missed out on one of the strongest bull runs since the dot-com fever of the late 1990s.
